PRESS RELEASE

Chesapeake Regional Information System for Our Patients (CRISP) awards Maryland’s Statewide Health Information Exchange on proposal from local firm.

 Baltimore City, Maryland – April 30, 2010

The Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients (CRISP) has announced that the proposal from the team of PD Inc (MD), Axolotl - prime contractor (CA), SRA (VA) and Dell/Perot Systems (TX) has won the competition for the development of a Maryland, statewide health information exchange (HIE), funded by the State of Maryland.

PD Inc. is the training & IT services collaborator and co-authored the winning proposal with the prime and other team members. PD Inc was asked to present our capabilities to ensure a successful implementation of a consumer-centric private and secure health information exchange. Our team efforts have enabled CRISP to select our team’s proposal over those of other semifinalists such as the Microsoft – HealthUnity team, and Vangent.

PD Inc.’s knowledge and experience allowed us to emphasize the need to assist of physicians in private practice, as well as their nurses and administrative personnel, in migrating from paper medical records to digitized data, and then to an electronic health record (EHR) that would be interoperable with systems maintained by area pharmacies and pathology laboratories.

In addition to stressing the importance of building an EHR, PD Inc. depicted a program through which clinical and administrative personnel would be trained to utilize such a system.  The application of PD Inc’s expertise on use of an enterprise system would enable physicians to utilize an EHR, to obtain information on a given patient’s allergies, view his / her medication history, and immunization record, as well as order prescriptions and tests.

PD Inc.’s demonstrated abilities and Maryland presence are important in view of the need to offer HIE – EHR network utilization training to area care providers. Additionally, medical practice principals must build and demonstrate “meaningful use” of an EHR system in Maryland by 2014.  This is a critical requirement that will have to be met in order for a practitioner to continue receiving his or her Medicare reimbursement payments.
